Allies in Action: A Recap of President Biden and Sec. Granholm’s Visit to Canada

On March 24, 2023, President Joe Biden during his visit to Canada to meet with Prime Minister Trudeau and address Canada’s Parliament. Among the topics of discussion were climate change and the countries’ mutual efforts to address climate change and promote clean energy initiatives.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm accompanied President Biden; during the visit, she met with Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), and gathered with leaders to advance climate and clean energy initiatives. She also accompanied President Biden in his meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who, following the visit, announced Canada’s pledge to invest $306 million USD toward the restoration and preservation of the Great Lakes.

Foundational to the partnership between DOE and NRCan is a Memorandum of Understanding that was signed in 2021, which identifies areas for bilateral energy collaboration to be implemented over the duration of the agreement. An Action Plan was completed last year, and since then, DOE and NRCan have collaborated and made advances on initiatives regarding:

  • Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), and carbon dioxide removal (CDR)
  • Critical minerals;
  • Civil nuclear energy; and
  • Energy-related cybersecurity

For the United States, President Biden’s Investing in America plan is breathing life into the clean energy economy and integrating it into the Nation’s infrastructure.

Together, our two governments are committed to working together towards an energy-sustainable future: addressing climate change, investing in clean energy, and creating the jobs to sustain such advancements.
